A quick example of the natural flow regime – Danforth Brook over the course of one year (watch the large rock in the center of the stream).

Does this stream have flow problems?
cfs = cubic feet of water passing per second

Exposed stream banks no longer offer habitat for fish, mussels or invertebrates.
The riparian plants and soil become dessicated when exposed to sun & wind.  This can cause the plants to fall into the stream and the banks to slump, erode, or collapse.

Rating curve development & water depth readings

Hourly, daily & seasonal fluctuations can be analyzed for pollutant loadings, habitat requirements for key species, or channel forming flows.

Individual flow measurements

If done at critical times, such as summer low flow periods or during storms,  measurements can be compared to habitat requirements for key species, channel forming flows, or used to estimate pollutant loadings.

ØNemasket R. – dry in Middleborough 1997
ØSegreganset R. & Wading R. – stressed basins, MA Office of Water Resoucres, DEM (now DCR)
ØCanoe R. – nearly dry 1999 near Norton’s wellfield, rare mussels died
Rumford R., Queset Br., Robins Pond outlet, Poor Meadow Br., & Trout Br. all have unusually low flows for the region which may be due to water withdrawals (USGS)
